Lighting Samples by David Beyerlein

Natural Light: Usually lit by a large window; natural light is soft, uniform, and tends to give a clean and polished look. The first 8 samples are from an elementary school that wanted quick portraits of every graduating 6th grader with a backdrop that was undeniably an educational environment. These are 8 of the 57 students photographed. The other 4 examples were taken in rooms with varying size windows and a uniform backdrop. (Please click photo to view larger version)

Studio Lighting Kits: Lighting kits are a bit more cumbersome to set up, but provide great control and consistency. Studio lighting kits allow you to manipulate the overall mood and tone of the photos; ranging from dark contrast to soft light. The first 10 samples are taken indoors, whether in a studio or in an office setting. The last 2 were taken on-location with a portable lighting kit.

Ambient Light: Ambient light is simply using what light is available. The 8 samples below are from a customer who wanted quick portraits of her newest staff members to frame and showcase in their guest lounge. Some spaces have much better light to make portraits than others, but generally, overhead lamps are a bit less consistent and provide a little bit of shadowy contrast.

Family Portraits by David Beyerlein

For sessions with young children, I usually recommend selecting one location and getting a variety of photos. With weather, logistics, and varying levels of moods, it usually the most comfortable way to go to get a bunch of great portraits. I estimate about two hours total, which is certainly flexible. Ideal lighting is early in the morning or later into the afternoon/evening, to get some of the golden light and low contrast tones. I have tips on wardrobe and output below the gallery.

Wardrobe: I always recommend dressing for comfort, warmth and how you naturally would. Simple neutrals tend to photograph better, but you really can't go wrong. Bringing extra outfits doesn’t hurt, and I certainly don’t mind carrying a small duffle bag around for y'all.

Output: I am confident in producing 4-5 very solid unique portraits of the whole family, and a handful of others. It’s very often 10 portraits with a handful of candids mixed in, but I aim to set expectations. All photos willll be optimized for digital use, and another set optimized for print. Y'all will have printing rights and I am glad to consult for albums, layouts, etc.
